A stretch of road that only opened this morning is already having a few bedding in problems.

The Maidstone bridges scheme, which has been running since the start of June, finished this morning.

The two new northbound lanes on the A229 Fairmeadow are now open, allowing drivers to bypass the bridge system.

But this has already been causing a few issues, with drivers ignoring road markings and signs.

Drivers travelling north on Bishops Way towards the gyratory need to be in the left or middle lanes if heading over the bridges, and in the middle or right lanes if using the new road.

However, some drivers that were so used to the old system were still turning left over the bridges from the right-hand lane, cutting up other road users wanting to go straight on in the middle lane.

And the problems didn't stop there, with cars turning right off St Peter's Bridge heading down the new lanes, the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

Workers from KCC and Jacksons Engineering were thankfully on-site to stop the cars getting into a serious accident.

The workmen will remain at the bridges for the course of the day to help monitor traffic, but they're hoping drivers begin to get used to the new layout, and pay attention to signage and road markings.
