More than 1,500 people responded to a consultation on proposed changes to Maidstone’s historic Mote Park.

Maidstone council ran the public survey until Thursday, December 4, about ways to generate money from the 450-acre site to pay for its upkeep.

Ideas put forward included nominal parking charges, crazy golf and an aerial slide.

The park, named Britain’s second favourite, had 1.1m visitors in 2014, but it costs the council £1.8m a year to maintain at a time when it needs to find £3.4m worth of savings over the next five years.

A blip with the online consultation, which saw it closed a few hours early, but it reopened once the issue was raised. In total, 1,520 people took part.

The report with the market research findings is due to be published this week, after which options will be considered, and a report with recommended options will go to the cabinet in the New Year.
