A man has been airlifted to a London hospital with serious injuries after he was run over in a town centre car park.

Police and paramedics were called to Holland Road in Maidstone shortly after 7.20am today, after reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car.

It is understood to have happened in the car park of the Live It Well centre, which provides mental health services.

The air ambulance was called

It is believed the man had been lying on the ground, possibly asleep, when he was run over.

The 29-year-old was treated for a serious head injury before being taken to a London hospital by the air ambulance for further medical attention.

A member of staff at the Live It Well Centre said: "When I got here there was just police cars and ambulances but no-one I saw that was no-one else around."

Andrew Spencer, who lives in Holland Road, said: "I looked out this morning and I saw that paramedics were attending to someone on the ground."

"There was about two paramedic cars, an ambulance, and three police cars. It was obviously quite a serious incident and they were quite a long time dealing with the person.

"At one stage I saw what was either a police helicopter or and air ambulance over head but it zoomed off.

"I just looked out and said 'crikey'. I think someone must have been seriously hurt because they were dealing with them for some considerable time. "Police started to search the undergrowth for something."

Another neighbour said: "We heard from police that somebody as asleep under a car and had been run over."

Enquiries into the incident are on-going.
