A phone network will be starting work on a main road leading into a town centre this week.

O2 will be carrying out "utility repair and maintenance" along the A229 Loose Road in Maidstone.

A temporary, multi-way traffic light system will be set up to control the flow of vehicles at the junction by The Swan pub.

As a result, the works will also affect side roads Cripple Street and Boughton Lane.

It will begin this Wednesday, and is scheduled to go on for three days, finishing Friday.

There was some initial confusion on a local Facebook group due to signs being put up along the pavement last week.

They stated that the road would be completely closed between 8am and 6pm, from Monday, March 6 until Friday, March 10.

Cllr Brian Clark (Lib Dem), for South Ward, posted an update on the group, saying that there are "no plans" to close the A229.

He believes the signs are for Boughton Lane, where work will be carried out by an electricity company next Monday for five days.

As reported on one.network, the upcoming maintenance will not disrupt traffic or shut the road.

Cllr Clark said: "This morning officers at KCC informed me the O2 works are still planned for March 1-3, near the Swan junction (signal controlled works) and that the March 6-10 licence is for Boughton Lane near Pheasant Lane, requested by UK Power Networks (although the works there are not expected to require the lane to be closed)."

The signs have since been taken down.
