Plans to demolish part of a school are under way after a building was found to be in "poor condition" and offering "unsatisfactory conditions" for teaching.

Sutton Valence School wants to dismantle one of its buildings at its site in North Street, near Maidstone.

An application, sent to Maidstone council, shows the school wants to rebuild the single-storey building in the same place.

Andrew Cowlard of MEB Design Ltd is working on behalf of the school, which has 868 pupils on its roll from ages two to 19.

Information provided in the application planning document says: "The building is in active use as a teaching facility, but the condition of the building fabric is in a poor condition and offers unsatisfactory internal conditions for teaching.

"It is poorly insulated and very inefficient in terms of energy demand and retention of heat.

"The building is single-storey, so small-scale mechanical machinery will be used to dismantle and deposit into skips within the construction site compound.

"Following the demolition and site clearance of any waste materials, the site is to be reutilised for the construction of a new single-storey classroom block on approximately the same footprint."

If approved, demolition would begin on March 25 and completed on April 15.

A separate application would be submitted for the rebuilding of the site.
