Emergency services descended on a station and a railway bridge after concerns were raised about the behaviour of a man.

Police said they were called in response to concerns about the man's welfare after he was seen on the high level bridge near Maidstone East station.

The bridge spans Fairmeadow, a busy dual carriageway, and unconfirmed Twitter reports suggest the man might have been near the edge for a period of time.

Officers from Kent and British Transport Police forces were called to the scene around 10.30am on Sunday and later said a man had been detained.

A spokesman for BTP said the man was taken to hospital but did not appear to have any visible injuries.

Ambulances and fire engines could also be seen nearby.

The emergency services' presence has led to train delays in the area this morning and a large crowd of people could be seen on the station platform.

Southeastern tweeted Network Rail had cut the power until the man was removed from the tracks.

The line had to be recharged before services could resume at around 11.30am.
