Officers attended along with experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and the item has been deemed safe.

EOD added it was called to assist police but found "the article was of no significance" so "no further action was taken".

Eyewitnesses say an area of the street, near the junction with London Road, including a number of houses, was taped off during this time.

Yesterday, the bomb disposal unit was called to Chatham after a "suspicious object" was found in a house.

However, once again, the item was deemed safe.
