Police officers cordoned off the Market Buildings in Maidstone, which links Earl Street and High Street after claims of a sexual assault

Police are investigating claims of a sexual assault in Maidstone town centre.

A woman is said to have been attacked in the street at about 5.40am today.

The entrances to the Market Buildings, which links the High Street and Earl Street, were sealed by officers at around 7.30am following the report.

Market Buildings was cordoned off at 7.30am this morning following an alleged sexual assault
Police are at the High Street entrance of Market Buildings.
The Earl Street entrance is also closed.
Police have closed off Market Buildings at both entrances.

Owners of businesses in the narrow street were unable to get to their shops, including Michael Tobley who runs the Art Lounge cafe.

The cordon was removed at around midday after crime scene photographers took pictures of the street with witnesses reporting they were focusing on the area of the street closest to High Street.
