NEARLY 2,000 electricity customers were left without power after a fault on an underground cable this morning.

Homes and businesses around Maidstone town centre were affected by the power cut from about 6am.

Electricity supplier EDF Energy Network's engineers managed to restore supplies to more than 1,600 customers by 7.03am with further customers having supplies again at 7.40am.

Power was completely restored by 10.10am.

However at 10.46am, about 230 customers in the Knightrider Street area of Maidstone lost power after a second, unrelated, cable fault.

A spokesman for EDF said engineers were working to restore supplies as quickly and safely as possible and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
