A bank and a newsagent have been forced to close after being hit by a power cut.

Shops on Bank Street, Maidstone, have shut after the electricity went off at around 9am.

Santander and McColl's newsagents have signs on their doors informing customers they will be shut until further notice.

The cash machine outside the bank is also out of order.

The Brenchley pub has kept its doors open, with dozens of people still inside despite the lack of electric.

Certain appliances still had power while the lights didn't.

Staff have put up signs informing visitors that they are only able to serve limited items on their food menu and the choice of drinks is limited to coffee, tea, certain soft drinks, spirits and beer.

The lights inside have been flickering.

Workmen are dealing with the issue in the street.

All supplies were restored by 12.45pm.

Other businesses down the street were unaffected, including Hollywood Nails and Beauty, Sandersons estate agents and Pars Supermarket.

A spokeswoman for UK Power Networks said: "Our engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power to 21 homes and businesses in Maidstone. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
