Maidstone: Rare mammatus clouds seen over town

Rare clouds, often associated with approaching tornadoes, have been spotted over Maidstone.

The dramatic formations, known as mammatus clouds, have a distinct pouch-like appearance, created by sinking air.

According to the MET Office, they are among the most unusual types of cloud and are formed by turbulence during large storms.

The images were captured just as the town was subjected to a sudden thunderstorm and deluge of rain this lunchtime.

More often seen in the United States, the clouds can form during storms involving tornadoes, meaning some see them as a warning sign for approaching twisters.

However, they are usually seen once the worst of a weather system has passed.
