It is not yet known how many properties were affected by the interruption to supplies. On its website, South East Water confirmed the cause of the issue.

“We currently have a power outage at our site which means we are unable to pump the water,” it stated.

“You may therefore be experiencing no water or low water pressure.”

It had been expected that the issue would be fixed by around 3.30pm, but supplies were finally restored shortly before 6.15pm.

Steve Andrews, head of service management at South East Water, said: “A leak is impacting the flow of water to our boosters.

“The team are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue and restore the water supply to the area.

“Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience caused, we understand that loss of supply or low pressures can be very frustrating. Rest assured we are doing everything we can to restore service as normal.”
