Road campaigners' anger as Shogun flips over

MEMBERS of a road safety action group have spoken out after a car flipped onto its side and spilled fuel into the road.

A Mitsubishi Shogun came left the road at Sheals Crescent in Maidstone and overturned at about 3.15am today, waking residents living nearby.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene and Maidstone Borough Council was also called to sand the fuel that was spilling into the road.

Two teenage males were seen running away from the vehicle. One was wearing a white top, the other a black top. They have not yet been found.

Sheals Action Group, which campaigns for lower speed limits and a speed camera on the notoriously dangerous road, think that the latest incident proves their point once again.

June Wilkins, who lives in Sheals Crescent, said: “It is just a fact that because of the speed people come round the corner here a serious accident is waiting to happen.

“We have campaigned for so long for something to be done but nothing has been. There was another crash two or three weeks ago. We just feel that someone should listen to us really.”

Gianna Pollero, spokeswoman for Maidstone and Malling Police, said: “We haven’t caught the two people yet, and we don’t know why they ran away. We assume there were no serious injuries or they wouldn’t be able to run away so fast.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call the police on 01622 608189.
