A three-year-old child has been airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car.
The A26 Tonbridge Road in Maidstone was closed from near the Esso Tesco Express up to the Cherry Tree pub.
Officers say they were called to a collision between a car and a pedestrian just after noon.
Paramedics also attended the scene and a three-year-old child was airlifted to King’s College hospital for treatment to injuries believed to be serious.
A police cordon was in place near the junction with Hambledon Court until 3.30pm.
A spokesman for the air ambulance said: “Our crew arrived on scene at 12.30pm where they worked with paramedics and Kent Police to help treat the patient, involved in a road traffic collision.
“They then transported the patient to a major trauma centre by air.”
Witnesses said the little boy was crossing the road towards Hambledon Court when he was hit.
The driver stopped at the scene.
One woman said: “Both the child’s mother and the driver were distraught.”
The road was closed while officers investigate the circumstances but reopened three hours later.
It is understood the police are no longer appealing for further witnesses.
The ambulance service said: “Crews assessed and treated one patient at the scene before being joined by The Air Ambulance Charity, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, who airlifted the patient to King’s College Hospital in London for further medical treatment.”
