Overnight closures have begun on a significant stretch of road to allow planned resurfacing work to take place.

Work on the A26 Tonbridge Road in Maidstone, a major route in and out of the County Town, started on Tuesday and - weather permitting - is due to be finished by June 12.

Kent Highways has planned to work to take place in stages, with sections of the carriageway shut to traffic between the hours of 9pm and 5am.

The new road surface is being put down between Westree Close and St Andrew’s Church.

Kent County Council says it hopes by doing the work in one project will prevent smaller bouts of roadworks which could disrupt daytime traffic.

Diversions via alternate routes will be put in place during the closures.

People living within the section of road being closed who need access while works are ongoing are being asked to speak to work crews on site.

As part of the preparation work for the resurfacing drains or manhole covers may be adjusted or replaced.

Skid-resistant surfaces on the approach to pedestrian crossing points are also being replaced.
