A main road was closed for several hours after a man from Rochester died in a crash in Maidstone.

Emergency services were called after a silver VW Golf collided with trees and a telegraph pole on the A229 Chatham Road at 3.37am.

It happened on the slip road towards the Running Horse roundabout. The driver, a 37-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle ended up on its roof.

Officers remained at the scene and the stretch of the A229 where it becomes Royal Engineers Road was closed between the Ringlestone / Springfield Roundabout and Running Horse Roundabout.

Kent Fire and Rescue launched their drone at 10.09am to assist police.

Traffic heading out of the County Town towards Chatham was being diverted up Boxley Road and through Sandling.

At 11am, Kent Police RPU tweeted that the A229 had reopened, however the slip off to the Running Horse roundabout was still shut for highways repair work. It is likely to remain so for the rest of the day.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw the driver prior to the incident, to call 01622 798538 quoting reference MM/AH/28/17.

A few hours earlier, at 12.40am there was another collision involving one vehicle in Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone.

Police officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service went to the scene where they found a man and woman with injuries. The woman went to a local hospital and the man was taken to a London hospital.

The road remained closed until the car was recovered.
