Drivers are being told to expect delays in a town centre due to a number of roadworks.

There is currently one lane shut on the A229 Palace Avenue, which is part of the one-way system in Maidstone.

KCC Highways tweeted this afternoon warning motorists of the closure, which is as a result of South East Water carrying out repair works.

Motorists traveling through Maidstone this week may have noticed the one-way system to be more blocked up than usual.

A number of roadworks and closures in the town centre are having a large knock-on effect with journey times.

Lower Boxley Road

Internet service provider, Netomnia, are currently rolling out an ultrafast full-fibre broadband in areas across the county.

They have set up multi-signal lights that start in Lower Boxley Road.

As a result, Fisher Street, Hardy Street, Well Road, James Street and Boxley Road are all affected.

The works started on Tuesday and is expected to be completed by Friday, June 23.

Chatham Road

SGN emergency gas works have forced Chatham Road to close.

It is normally accessed via the A229 Royal Engineers Road and is used daily by Ringlestone residents and buisnesses.

Drivers wanting to go into town from the estate are having to go via the Running Horse Roundabout.

It was closed from Tuesday and is expected to be shut until next week.

Loose Road

Heading into town, South East Water are carrying out utility repair and maintenance works along the A229 Loose Road.

It is one of the main routes used to get into town and leads onto Sheal’s Cresent – the start of the one-way system.

There is currently two-way traffic lights along the road, which were set up on Tuesday.

It will be in place for just over a week and should be completed by Wednesday, June 21.

Tonbridge Road

On the other side of the River Medway, another main route has been affected due to emergency roadworks.

Gas company SGN have set up two-way lights along the A26 Tonbridge Road, which are said to be active just before Teston Bridge.

This started yesterday and will finish on Wednesday, June 21.

Farleigh Lane

Farleigh Lane is also closed from today until Sunday (June 18), between the junction of Gatland Lane and Rectory Lane.

KCC are carrying out their 2023 Micro Surfacing Programme, between 9.30am and 3.30pm on weekdays and 7am to 7pm at weekends.

It means those who normally use East Farleigh Bridge will have to use a diverted route during this time.

The council adds that this type of work can be affected by bad weather and residents will be updated if it is not possible to be carried out.
