The eastbound carriageway between Hermitage Lane and Coldharbour Roundabout was initially shut to allow for a new service connection to be installed.

It started on Monday (June 10), but after just five days of disruption, the company has decided to reschedule.

The works, which are part of the Coldharbour Roundabout revamp, were set to go on for three weeks – until Tuesday, July 2.

It had been affecting those wanting to get to South Aylesford Retail Park, McDonald’s or Aldi, as well as Maidstone Hospital along Hermitage Lane.

Both Kent County Council (KCC) and the NHS Trust posted warnings on social media, advising people to provide extra time for their journeys.

Motorists also shared their frustrations online.

One claimed it took them 25 minutes to get from Tonbridge Road to McDonald’s, which is a distance of 1.8 miles.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Kayt Pritch said: “Does the whole lane need to be coned off as far down as it is?

“Took half an hour to get off the retail estate because nothing could turn right. Seems a lot of lane closure with nothing going on.”

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and continue to work in consultation with Kent County Council to plan and reschedule this work.”

However, since the response, the electricity company has changed their plans.

A spokeswoman from UK Power Networks said: “Our electricity connection works on the A20 London Road in Maidstone, which are part of the Coldharbour Roundabout improvements, have been postponed until the summer holidays to reduce the traffic impact.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and continue to work in consultation with Kent County Council to plan and reschedule this work.”
