Overnight roundabout closures which were due to carry on for three more weeks have finished earlier than expected.

The A20 Coldharbour Roundabout in Maidstone was shut last night (August 2) for the final time.

Contractors Breheny has been tasked by Kent County Council (KCC) to carry out improvement works on the roundabout, next to Junction 5 of the M20.

The scheme was approved in 2019 and is set to reduce congestion in the area and boost air quality.

It started in February and workers are making “good early progress” so far.

Big changes to the layout of the roundabout have been taking place – with two lanes being increased to three and additional lanes provided on the approaches.

Traffic lights have been removed and replaced by Give Way lines.

Breheny previously warned drivers full overnight closure of the roundabout would take place from Monday, July 22 to Saturday, August 10.

Between 8pm and 6am a diversion route was put in place.

A spokesperson said: “The full roundabout night closures, scheduled for three weeks, have now been completed one week ahead of schedule and Friday, August 2 will be the last full roundabout closure within this period.

“There are no more full roundabout closures planned now until October.

“The lane closure and the short diversion around Aylesford Interchange remain in place.”

In June, there was traffic chaos along Hermitage Lane and London Road as a result of electricity supply works.

The eastbound carriageway leading up to the roundabout was shut to allow for a new service connection to be installed by UK Power Networks.

However, after just five days of disruption, the company decided to reschedule.

It was postponed to the summer holidays to “minimise any disruption”.

The work started on Wednesday (July 31) and is set to last three to four weeks.
