Drivers are being warned of "severe delays" after a crash on the M20 caused a car to overturn and left three people in hospital.
All four lanes on the coastbound carriageway were temporarily closed between junctions 6 (Blue Bell Hill) and 7 (Detling) as a result of the accident, involving a lorry, a van and three cars.
Huge queues built up while the vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder with traffic backed up all the way back to the M26 J2a.
The travel time is said to be 60 minutes.
The M2 is also said to be busy up to junction 5 (Sittingbourne) as drivers seek alternative routes.
Police attended as well as Kent Fire and Rescue Service helped to free people from the wreckages and South East Coast Ambulance service (SECAmb).
There is congestion up to Junction 3 at the M26 Interchange and travel time is approximately 30 minutes. Lane two was re-opened at 4pm.
A spokesman for SECAmb confirmed that five people were treated at the scene and two have been taken to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and one to Maidstone Hospital for further treatment.
Ambulances left the scene just after 5.15pm and all road restrictions were lifted by 6.30pm.
