Two members of staff at a secondary school have been investigated by police in connection with claims of sexual activity with pupils.

It is understood that the male teachers were suspended last week as a result of the accusations made in relation to an incident during an educational trip.

Police have this week confirmed they have looked into the issue but the matter is now being handled internally.

A police spokesman said: “No criminal offences are believed to have been committed.”

KentOnline approached the head teacher of the school, which is within the Tonbridge and Malling borough, but they chose not to respond directly and instead referred the matter to Kent County Council which was quick to point out reporting restrictions protecting teachers from being identified.

Under the 2011 Education Act, is it against the law to name a teacher accused of committing a criminal offence. They can only be named if they are charged or if a court lifts restrictions.

The motion has been condemned by campaigners, including the executive director of the Society of Editors, Bob Satchwell, who said: “Although we acknowledge teachers’ fears about false accusations, the most important issue is surely to protect children.

“Malicious allegations by pupils are extremely rare and alongside this, the laws of libel, contempt and confidentiality already restrict newspapers from repeating and publishing unsubstantiated accusations.”
