Teens from Chatham and Gillingham admit to stealing car involved in serious crash in Buckland Hill, Maidstone

Two teenagers have admitted to stealing a car before being involved in a serious crash.

Caden Stephens, 18, had been driving the Mercedes before it collided with another vehicle in St Peter’s Street, Maidstone following a police chase.

Officers had followed the car from Lenham to the foot of Buckland Road, close to midnight on Monday, May 13.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken to a London hospital.

Three teens were arrested shortly afterwards, two of which appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court last week.

Caden Stephens, of Gordon Road, Gillingham, pleaded guilty to driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, without insurance and failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis.

He also indicated guilt to theft of car keys and a motor vehicle and to causing serious injury by driving dangerously.

He will remain in custody until his sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court on a date yet to be confirmed.

They appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court

A 17-year-old from Chatham, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also indicated guilty to aggravated vehicle taking.

He has been handed a five-month detention order and is disqualified from driving for a year.

A third teenager, a 17-year-old from Gillingham was also charged with aggravated vehicle taking.

He was bailed until a hearing at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 27.
