Tesco in Grove Green, Maidstone, given low food hygiene rating

A supermarket has admitted it is operating under its usual standard after being given a low food hygiene rating.

Tesco superstore in Grove Green, Weavering, near Maidstone, was handed a two rating after an inspection in May.

Takeaways, supermarkets, cafés and restaurants are rated from zero to five in three categories - hygienic food handling, cleanliness and conditions of facilitiles and building, and management of food safety.

The supermarket giant was rated as "improvement necessary" for the cleanliness of its facilities, which includes ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.

Its management of food safety was "generally satisfactory", while the store's hygienic food handling was rated as "good".

A Tesco spokesman said: “We recognise our Maidstone Grove Green store is not operating to our usual high standards that we expect as a business and therefore we have taken on board the results of the inspection and are seeking a re-rating of the store at the earliest opportunity.”
