Boughton Monchelsea Primary School parents angry over timing of Church Street closure

Parents taking their children to school at Boughton Monchelsea Primary can expect traffic chaos from Monday and for the next two weeks.
Many parents arriving by car currently stop in the village hall car park at the top of Church Street, cross over Heath Road on the conveniently placed pedestrian crossing and then walk the few yards down Church Hill to the school gate.
From Monday they will not be able to do that, as Church Street is going to be closed to traffic from its junction with Heath Road, down to No 9 at the far end.
The closure is to enable BT to lay 400m of new ducting in the carriageway so as to to take high speed fibre to the new Fernham Homes housing development being built in Church Street.
Angry parents are asking why BT couldn't have done the work either a couple of weeks sooner, during the half-term break, or waited a few weeks till the end of term and the summer holidays.
Instead many parents will be tempted to park illegally on the fast-moving Heath Road, or drop their children of in the narrow Church Hill and then perhaps attempt to do a U-turn.
Mum Karen Streeter said: "The timing is absolutely ridiculous!
"Church Street is the ONLY road that has access to parking for Boughton Monchelsea Primary School and this will now be closed.
"To park and drop off on Church Hill is a bun fight at the best of times, with people blocking Boughton Monchelsea Place and other site entrances, making it impossible to turn round on such a small country lane.
"There is limited parking for around 10 cars on Church Hill so can you imagine what it will be like when everyone that uses Church Street parking is trying to access that tiny road?
"That’s more than 200 children plus parents trying to get into school before 8.50am. Yes, some will walk, but for the majority who have to drive it will be chaos!"
Mrs Streeter said: "Are the developers of the new Fernham Homes so desperate that they put children’s safety at risk rather than wait till the school summer holidays are here?
"Then they would have six weeks to close that road with limited disruption.
"Surely the needs of the community should be put before the needs of the developers?"
