The magic of Christmas is officially in the air.

Maidstone’s countdown to Christmas has begun following a terrific evening of celebrations ahead of the festive season.

Thousands of people gathered in Jubilee Square on Thursday evening, eagerly anticipating the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on.

The event was supported by kmfm who worked alongside One Maidstone for an evening of fun and music.

The festivities got underway at 5pm, with the pair joined by singers and the stars from this year's Hazlitt Theatre Cinderella panto.

Visitors also had a chance to take pictures of festive characters, including Santa.

At 7pm, the event reached its climax as the Mayor of Maidstone, John Perry, pushed the red button to turn on the lights.

Previous events have drawn in as many as 5,000 people, and this year was no different, attracting an even bigger crowd.

A spokesperson for organisers One Maidstone added: “We are delighted to provide the lights and light switch on event on behalf of the businesses of Maidstone who finance both.

“To see so many people out having festive fun marks the start of the Christmas season in Maidstone for all to enjoy!”

Next month, Maidstone will also welcome its craft market to the town’s museum.

There will be more than 35 indoor stalls to browse, all selling unique hand-crafted items while also exploring the galleries in the museum.
