Tonbridge are still looking for their first win of the season after playing out a stalemate at home to Basingstoke.

A third straight draw offered Angels fans little to cheer ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Billericay, although a first clean sheet of the campaign offered some defensive satisfaction.

Basingstoke enjoyed the best of the chances at Longmead. Great work by Delano Sam-Yorke set up Tim Sills, but he scooped his shot over the crossbar.

Sills, the experienced former Aldershot and Torquay striker, caused plenty of problems for the Tonbridge defence. His dangerous cross was fractionally too high for Sam-Yorke and when Matthew Warner delivered an inviting centre late in the half, Sills planted a header just wide.

The best chance for Tonbridge came when Sonny Miles played George Purcell through, only for the striker to drill his shot wide of the post.

Purcell had his moments after the interval, too, wriggling free and shooting wide on one occasion, before seeing another shot blocked.

Basingstoke came within inches of snatching a winning goal when Sam-Yorke struck the post with Angels keeper Lee Worgan beaten.

The result leaves Tonbridge with three points from their first five Blue Square Bet South games.
