Maidstone's top police officer is advising Christmas shoppers to keep items safe over the coming weeks.

Officers from Maidstone's Community Safety Unit will be patrolling around the County Town's shops, bars and open spaces to deter thieves and prevent anti-social behaviour.

But with the festive season bringing attracting potential thefts, the number of patrols have been stepped up.

Maidstone district commander, chief inspector Ray Quiller, said: ""While my officers will be working closely with shops and businesses to identify suspicious behaviour, I would urge visitors to the town to remain vigilant and take some simple precautions to keep your possessions secure.

"Handbags should always be zipped up or fastened shut and kept to the front of you where they can be seen. Anything containing valuables should never be left unattended on top of a pram, shopping trolley or a mobility scooter.

"When withdrawing cash from ATMs, always be alert for anybody who is trying to see the PIN you are entering. If your purse or wallet is subsequently stolen, your bank account could be empty in a matter of minutes"

Town centre PCSOs will be at The Mall from 11am to 1pm on December 12 and December 19 to offer crime prevention advice.

They will be handing out free bank card protectors, chains which are used to secure purses inside handbags, as well as purse bells which the owner hears if it is moved.
