Brenchley Gardens, Maidstone, cordoned off after allegation of sexual assault

A town centre park was cordoned off by police this morning following an alleged sexual assault.

Brenchley Gardens, in Maidstone, was sealed off after police received reports of concerns for a woman's welfare.

An allegation of sexual assault was made and a man was arrested but later released without charge.

Forensics teams were at the scene.

The cordon covered the top end of the park, encompassing the band stand, and was lifted just after 10am.

Police confirmed investigations into the incident were ongoing but would not say whether they are exploring the possibility of the allegation being false.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Kent Police takes all allegations of sexual assault very seriously and are fully investigating this allegation."

She added a full statement would be taken from the victim and officers are carrying out inquiries in the park.

No other arrests have been made.

Parts of the St Faith's Street park remained open to the public while police combed the scene.
