Drivers have been warned to avoid Maidstone's one-way bridge system due to a series of lane closures.

Roadworks continue on the £5.7million project to revamp one of the town's busiest junctions.

Kent County Council is warning motorists to expect "long delays" as a result of the closures from tomorrow until Wednesday.

They are due to be in place from after tomorrow morning's rush-hour at 9.30am.

KCC's highways department warned: "Long delays are expected at peak times. Road users are advised to use an alternative route if possible."

There will be one lane instead of two for traffic heading onto Bishops Way and for those driving across St Peter's Bridge towards the High Street and Bishops Way. Fairmeadow onto the bridge will be restricted to two lanes.

The closures have to be made so that "deep construction and drainage works" on Bishops Way, where it meets High Street, can be carried out.

The work is due to be done both day and night.

The project is said to be on schedule and is expected to be finished by mid-November.
