Travellers have now moved on, after setting up camp at a popular park used by dog walkers and families.

More than 20 caravans pitched up in Mote Park on Sunday, and police called to the scene, near the leisure centre, at 4pm.

Officers arrested 21-year-old man from Molton, Yorkshire on suspicion of causing criminal damage after allegedly breaking a padlock to gain access to the site.

Officers from Maidstone Borough Council visited the site yesterday, when it appeared the travellers were preparing to leave, although five caravans remained overnight.

The site has now been vacated.
