A driver was fined for having no insurance when he went to help a friend collect his vehicle which had been seized by police also due to no insurance.

On Wednesday, July 5, a car was stopped by police on the A229 Chatham Road, Maidstone, when the occupants were spotted without seatbelts.

All four of the people in the car were given a Traffic Offence Report and those without a seatbelt were fined £100.

The driver also received an additional £300 fine and six points on his licence when it was found he was not insured.

Officers seized the vehicle and made arrangements with the driver for it to be collected by someone with insurance.

He later arrived with a friend to collect the car but following checks, he was found to be uninsured on the car he arrived in and so too was fined and given points.

The same team of officers stopped another driver in Earl Street, Maidstone, the same day for using his phone and having a cracked windscreen.

He was issued with fines totalling £300 and nine points on the licence.

Inspector Tom Pooley, from the Tactical Operations Command, said: “The majority of motorists drive safely however some still aren’t getting the message that seatbelts must be worn at all times for their own safety and that of others.

“It is also clear that some motorists still think it is OK to use their mobile phones without a hands free kit. It is not OK at any time.

“It only takes a second to be distracted and cause a potentially fatal accident. This small mistake could change lives forever.”
