The sparkle has fizzled out for a village fireworks display which has been entertaining families for more than 30 years.

Organisers of Larkfield’s bonfire night have made the decision to cancel this year’s show in New Hythe Lane while they work on strategies to minimise costs and manage crowd control.

Parish clerk Val Severn said: “We’re just as disappointed that it’s not going ahead this year, but the show has been beaten by its own success.

“It’s a free event and the crowd has continued to grow each year, but the growing number of people has caused parking issues, and with government cuts, it’s difficult to fund and run, especially as we have to rely on volunteers to manage it.”

The parish council has vehemently denied the decision has come after two teenage girls were injured by a rogue firework at last year’s show.

The sisters suffered minor burns and their clothes were scorched when a banger zoomed into the audience.

The Health and Safety Executive investigated the incident but officers wrote to councillors to say it is satisfied with how the display is organised and would not be taking any further action.

Mrs Severn added: “We have every hope the event will return next year, but we need to look at other ways to organise it.”
