A serial offender with a history of assaulting police officers has been jailed.

In January Tanya Winter admitted assaulting two police officers near Archbishop's Palace, Maidstone. She was told she could avoid jail if she could sober up and attend regular meetings.

Maidstone Magistrates Court heard Winter, 37, had at first responded well to probation meetings, but slowly stopped showing up.

Sentencing Winter today, District Judge Paul Goldspring said: "When I adjourned this case I had regard to your appalling criminal record.

"You've amassed 24 separate convictions for 45 separate offences. A number of these offences are for violence, more importantly, some of the offences are for assaulting police officers.

"I note you committed this offence while subject to post sentence supervision as a result of assaulting officers in May last year.

"I was persuaded that if there was a change in your lifestyle and you were given a chance, you could stay out of trouble.

"I gave you an opportunity to prove that was right. You didn't take that opportunity."

Winter, formerly of Hardy Street, Maidstone, was given two 60-day prison sentences, one for each offence, which will run concurrently.

She also admitted a charge of being drunk and disorderly, for which no sentence was given.
