Motorists' dreams come true as double yellows wash away in Maidstone

Thousands of motorists have been inconvenienced by a succession of road closures through the centre of Maidstone in recent weeks, while Kent Highways set about resurfacing the carriageway.

After the resurfacing work, the road-markings had to be repainted and for a while the town enjoyed fresh new bright yellow and white lines.

Sadly, the paint is already washing away in the recent wet weather and there are flakes of paint now across the pavement.

Madgalena Pospiszyl said: "Mill Street where I work was closed for several nights to allow the workers to repaint the road lines. Today we had the first rainfall after the road was repainted and shockingly, the paint started melting away.

"Maidstone residents might be interested to know how poorly their tax money is being spent - clearly if a road marking couldn’t survive a single rainfall, it wasn’t done very well."

A KCC spokesman said: “KCC has, for the last few weeks, been resurfacing several sections of the A229 in Maidstone.

“As an essential route that needs resurfacing, the work will prevent further deterioration and the need for smaller repairs which could cause more roadworks, delays and congestion.

“The work is expected to be finished by December 21.

“We have been affected by extensive rain, and as a result, some of the lining – which needs time to set – has been affected by the bad weather.

“These lines will be replaced as part of the continuing programme.”
