A blocked lane in Maidstone's one way system is causing delays for motorists.

Emergency repair works are being carried out on a water pipe in Upper Stone Street, just beyond the junction with Mote Road.

The works have partially blocked one of two lanes, causing queuing traffic in the area.

The work is being carried out by South East Water after its staff spotted a leak on Wednesday.

Distribution manager Ann Seach said: “A water leak in Upper Stone Street,

Maidstone was spotted by one of South East Water’s own staff on Wednesday 4 February.

“Investigations found the leak was the result of a burst on a six inch diameter water main. Because

Upper Stone Street is such a busy and major route during day time, we needed to keep disruption to a

minimum. We therefore carried out a temporary repair and returned overnight to complete the work.

“This emergency repair was not connected with our work in Week Street and Earl Street, where we have a £155,000 scheme to upgrade the ageing water main network. Our work there is part of a wider programme where we are investing £390 million over five years in upgrading our infrastructure.”
