A community organisation is putting on a Christmas spread for the elderly in Maidstone.

Shepway Chariots has arranged the meal to bring people from the area together and raise festive spirits.

The event will be held at the Shepway Youth & Community Centre, in Cumberland Road, from 1.30pm on Sunday, December 15.

As well as a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, visitors can join in with a Yuletide sing-song, a game of bingo and enjoy performances from an acoustic string group made up of young musicians in the area.

The Chariots has extended the invitation to any emergency service staff who will be working on Christmas day to join them for an early celebration.

Nikki Gough, the founder of the organisation, insists festive jumpers and hats are a must.

She said: "We want to give back in the community and to people that sometimes feel they get lost and overlooked.

"Christmas is a hard time anyway for many people. If we can make one person smile, we have done something right."

Businesses in Maidstone are helping support the event.

Morrisons, on Sutton Road, will supply fresh vegetables and a Shepway newsagents will donate some trifles.
