More than 700 people have signed a petition opposing Maidstone council’s proposals to extend a bus lane.
Residents say that far from easing congestion the bus lane proposal, which could cost more than £6m, would add to congestion and pollution.
The scheme would see Loose Road between the Wheatsheaf and Armstrong Road reduced from two lanes to one for ordinary traffic heading north into town.
The council is also proposing to grab grass verge from Sutton Road to extend the existing bus lane there.
Loose sub-postmaster Brian Clark has led the campaign against the bus lane. Along with Lib Dem South Ward councillor, Ian Chittenden, he is proposing to hand in the petition to the Maidstone Joint Transportation Board tomorrow.
Mr Clark said: "With all the housing development in South Maidstone, traffic congestion has become a huge concern. This scheme will increase congestion at one of the town’s most polluted spots. Residents have given the idea a resounding thumbs down."
