An injury-ravaged Aylesford Bulls side crashed to their second successive defeat of the season in London 1 South as they were beaten at Wimbledon on Saturday.
The Bulls, already missing several players including influential lock Paul Hyland and centre Lewis Thorneycroft, struggled from start to finish.
The game started in a scrappy manner, with both sides making mistakes. But it was the Bulls who had the first scoring opportunity, only for the upright to keep out Dave Dorton’s penalty in the fifth minute.
Eventually the scoring was opened on 18 minutes by Wimbledon but the Bulls hit back when Tim Verieivalu created space for Stevens to collect the ball and dive over.
Wimbledon restored their lead with a penalty on 32 minutes and added a second try just before half-time to dent the Bulls’ confidence.
The passage of play was much the same in the second half with the Bulls having to deal with intense pressure from Wimbledon.
Things got even worse for the Bulls on 50 minutes when lock Dave Smith was sent to the bin.
This proved costly for the Bulls as, in his absence, Wimbledon took advantage of the extra man to score from a five yard line-out with a good catch and drive, and they extended their lead further with a try under the posts.
A reshuffle in the pack, and the Bulls back to their full compliment, saw them start to show some fighting spirit. Stevens crashed over on 64 minutes, after he took a quick short arm penalty, with Dorton adding the two extra points to give the Bulls hope of a revival but it was to be their last score of the afternoon.
Wimbledon sealed the win deep into second half injury time with an unconverted try.
