There was fun aplenty to be had at Staplehurst village fete this weekend.

Held at the Surrenden Playing Field yesterday, the fete attracted an estimated 2,000 villagers over the course of the afternoon and evening.

There was Shaylers Fun Fair, a traditional Punch and Judy show from Rob Jones, and a bonny baby contest, as well as countless stalls and marquees.

The event was compared by Iain Dawson, also known as Viv the Spiv, or even as The King of One-liners, and there was entertainment from Clown Bluey, pony rides and a dance display by Feet Beats from Biddenden.

Fish and chips, burgers and Spitfire ale kept the crowds sustained.

Some of the more unusual attractions included an exhibition of wood-carving using a chainsaw from Steve Andrews of Tribal Animals. His owl creation was later sold for £100 to help the cause. Children had the chance to get up close and personal with some unusual animals brought along by PonyZoo.Org. They included a raccoon, emu and ducklings.

Music was a big part of the proceedings with several spots by Titus in the afternoon and with rock guitarist Mick Mepham in the early evening.

Head-lining the entertainment was the nine -piece show band The Vintage Corporation, who unfortunately did experience some technical problems with their PA, causing the show to over-run till 10.30pm.

The event was sponsored by Redrow Homes and scores of local businesses.

The money raised will go to various good causes locally, including at least £500 to the Guides’ roof appeal. The money is still being counted, but the grand draw alone raised £973, thanks to the generosity of Doves Funerals who put up the £100 first prize.
