From the reaction we've had, we know that many aren't happy about it - but the bosses behind Radio 1's Big Weekend insist that tickets were allocated fair and square.

The two-day music extravaganza in Maidstone has caused much friction amongst the thousands of Kent residents who failed to score.

More than 518,000 people across the UK registered this month to get their hands on the 34,000 free tickets available for the concert at Mote Park, which will feature big name such as of Madonna, The Kooks, Goldfrapp and Nelly.

Last week, winners and losers were notified by email about their success or failure in the draw. Here's a snapshot of the reaction.

Kent Online was quickly flooded with angry comments from unsuccessful Maidstone folk who insisted the town had been overlooked instead of favoured.

Kent Online has submitted a request to the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act asking for a list of all the UK postcodes in which tickets were allocated and how many went to each area.

Several alleged that priority was given to residents living in ME1 (Medway) instead of Maidstone’s postcode area.

Simon Crowhurst said: “This has been heralded as the 'best thing ever to happen to Maidstone'; however, with so many Maidstone residents excluded, I am not sure many people will agree.

"All Maidstone residents have to look forward to is traffic congestion, road closures, parking nightmares and deafening sounds."

Local resident Toni Wheeler branded the event ‘Radio 1’s big con’, while Dee Smith added: “I live opposite (the) park as do 20 family and friends, none of us have tickets.”

Those lucky enough to receive tickets who contacted us included Jen Smith from Larkfield, Sarah Jones from Rainham, Jo Humphrey from Bearsted, Hollie Maxwell from Maidstone and Chelsea Thomas from Brighton.

Ms Thomas wrote: “ They can't please everyone. Some people are just sore. It’s only two days of the year and people should stop moaning that they didn’t get tickets."

"As promised, the majority of tickets went to those in Maidstone and the surrounding area.

"Forty-five per cent went to those with postcodes covered by Maidstone council itself and a further 40 per cent went to other parts of Kent, including those with Tunbridge Wells, Canterbury, Dartford, Bromley and Croydon postcodes.

"Ten per cent went to areas bordering Kent, including parts of Sussex, Surrey, Essex and London, with the remaining 5 per cent for other areas in the UK."

She added: "You had the highest chance of being allocated a ticket if you lived in Maidstone itself. For Maidstone residents, that is a 1 in 16 chance for Saturday, and 1 in 9 chance for Sunday."
