Police were called to a report of a sudden death of a man near Allington Lock this morning.
It is believed the man was renovating the boat and was found on the deck.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.
Police and forensic officers with rubber gloves were next to the Malta Inn pub investigating the incident on Saturday afternoon.
A private ambulance drew up at about 3pm and took a stretcher covered by purple material to the scene past drinkers in the pub garden.
Walkers and pleasure boats were allowed to continue passing the scene.
A member of pub staff said the man was known to them.
