Two men who kept their cool in the chaotic aftermath of a fatal shooting to try to save the lives of the victims have been given a National Police Bravery Award.

On the night of December 27, 2009, 43-year-old Jack Treeby and his brother Gary, 40, were run over, shot and beaten in a family feud which had exploded in violence in Quarry Road, Maidstone.

John Beale, who lived nearby, raced to the scene and was the first to give first aid to both men, before being joined by Michael Wright. Both men used leggings and tights as tourniquets and gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Mr Treeby, who had been run over, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Gary survived.

CCTV showed the pair carrying out first aid while all around them was chaos, with other family members at the scene were hysterical.

Bill Treeby and two of his sons, George and Billy Jnr, were later convicted of Jack’s murder. George and Billy are serving a minimum of 23 years in jail, while Bill Snr was found dead in prison.

Mr Beale and Mr Wright were commended by Kent Police in a ceremony honouring police officers and civilians for heroic actions.
