Soaring temperatures and dry conditions for several weeks brought a very busy weekend for fire crews across west Kent.
Separate to the blaze in an oast house at Lavenders Road, West Malling, yesterday, which at its height was tackled by 40 firefighters, teams from across the area were called to a series of incidents, many prompted by the heat.
On Saturday, there was a car alight in Beaufighter Road, Kings Hill, while crews were called twice to Boughton Monchelsea, firstly in the morning yesterday at just before noon to some large logs alight in a wood yard, and later the same day to Old Tree Lane at just after 5.30pm, to a smouldering hedge alight.
They were also called back to woodlands in Cranbrook, where they had been called last week.
Yesterday, two fire crews fought a blaze at Hemsted Forest, where a member of the public met them on their arrival so that they could be taken to the right spot.
A large patch of undergrowth, measuring 25m by 40m, had to be dampened down, with firefighters using a shuttle technique to get the water to the affected area. They were at the scene for more than two hours.
They had also been called to Angley Woods nearby where several smouldering hot spots also needed dampening down on Friday evening at just before 5pm.
Both woods have deep seated peat which is hard to access for firefighters and which can continue to burn for days.
Yesterday, there was also some rubbish alight in Neville Park, Snodland, at just before 9.30pm, and crews from Larkfield were there for 20 minutes, before being called to grass alight in Walpole Close, East Malling while at just after 10pm there was also a small fire in a field in Bearsted, off the A20, near Junction 8 of the M20, which also took around 20 minutes to extinguish.
