Car crashes into All Saints churchyard in Maidstone

A car has smashed into a church graveyard, splitting a headstone and leaving a mound of rubble behind.

It happened just before 5.30am at All Saints Church, at the junction of Maidstone's Mill Street and Knightrider Street.

A force spokesman said a 33-year-old man from Maidstone has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink.

The graveyard also houses the path leading into town, but access is still possible.

Just after 9am the road had to be briefly closed while the car was loaded onto a recovery truck.

All Saints Church dates back to about 650 and upkeep of the headstones is a matter for families. Many of the memorials date back to the 1700s and 1800s.

The smash follows an incident where a car ploughed into an historic pub last night.
