Top seed Chris Simpson produced a stylish, professional display to crush the resistance of talented young Egyptian Karim Ali Fathi to win the SE Leisure Kent Open final at The Mote Squash Club.
Simpson, the 25-year-old world No.43 from Guernsey who is now based in Yorkshire, enjoyed long spells of dominance to win in straight games.
Simpson said: "I had watched Karim play all week. He is obviously a very dangerous player who can hit winners from a variety of positions. So my tactics were to try to keep him quiet and not let him get in front, where he is so dangerous.
"He likes a fast game and that’s how he’s won his matches to get to the final.
"But I sensed he was getting tired and he wasn’t getting forward well from the back corners if I was able to play it short.
"I’m pleased with the way I’ve played all week and would love to come back and defend the title next year.
The Mote’s 16-year-old James Evans sprang a surprise in the qualifying competition by removing full-time professional Rory Pennell before bowing out to experienced Pakistani Adil Maqbool, who was full of praise for Evans’ attacking play.
Then, ahead of the main final, Evans crowned a successful week by beating county junior colleague Ryan Duke 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 in the final of The Mote Club Championship.
The Kent Open is the focal point of the county development programme and many of the professionals gave up their time to hold coaching clinics for juniors.
