Churchgoers braved bracing temperatures as they slept rough for a night to raise money for homeless people in the town.
Huddled in sleeping bags and with only flimsy cardboard shelters to protect them from the elements were 17 volunteers from across the parish, who came together for the event at The Gallagher Stadium last night.
So far it has raised nearly £5,000 for Maidstone Winter Shelter and Homeless Care Day Centre.
Amanda Sidwell spent an uncomfortable night sleeping under the stars.
The 53-year-old, of Boxley Road, said: “It was very enlightening and so cold, at one point it got down to freezing. I lay there with a few tears in my eyes because I work with homeless people and it just brought it home, what these guys go through day in day out.
“In the days we live in, with all the finances and resources we have in this country it is hard to believe people are living like this.”
Sleep Out was organised by Maidstone Deanery in partnership with Maidstone Churches Together.
Co-ordinator Heather May said: “We know it was nothing like being truly homeless. I came home to my warm house and bed but it did give us a little insight into the realities facing vulnerable people.”
Archdeacon Stephen Taylor was the first to sign up. He said: “We want to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by the homeless while demonstrating our commitment to supporting them. Our one night of discomfort pales into insignificance to those who sleep out night after night often in terrible weather.”
The winter shelter is due to open on December 14 for 12 weeks, with seven different churches offering shelter and respite during some of the coldest weather thanks to a team of more than 200 volunteers.
