Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly, who plays Becky McDonald, is to open Maidstone’s newest store.

Poundland opens in the old Woolworth’s in Week Street, on Thursday, July 15, creating 30 new jobs.

There will be a family fun day on Saturday, July 17 when Katherine will sign autographs and have her picture taken with fans.

From 10am, she will also be giving out £1 vouchers, which shoppers can exchange for anything from mascara to a two litre bottle of milk.

Shoppers can also take part in a checkout challenge where £100 worth of Poundland vouchers will be given away throughout the day.

An in-store DJ and entertainer will be giving away balloons and sweets.

Poundland’s trading director David Coxon said: “We are delighted to bring our unique proposition to Maidstone.

"The £1 price hasn’t changed since we opened our first store 20 years ago. Our current customers love us and we are sure the Maidstone shoppers will too.”
