A borough councillor has defended sharing a social media post claiming Britain is run by Islam.

Independent Maidstone Borough Councillor Eddie Powell shared the post this morning which shows Theresa May in a room with Saudi Arabians and Tommy Robinson with young army recruits.

Cllr Powell denied claims he was sharing offensive material but said he was upset with the way in which Robinson has been treated following the photo with the group of men.

He said: "I don't go into the ins and outs of these pictures. I was discussing the Tommy Robinson thing. The way he has been treated has been totally unreasonable.

"He has done nothing wrong and I think it has done more damage for the army than good."

Robinson was a co-founder of the far right activist group the English Defence League and hit the headlines this week after he was pictured with young men from the army.

One of the soldiers has been expelled for his role in the video.
