They have been world championships for more than 40 years, and now it seems the custard pie championships’ fame has reached the hallowed halls of University Challenge.
This week’s TV programme, screened on BBC2, showed two teams of students battling for the boffins' top spot – but they were left baffled by a question on Coxheath, near Maidstone.
The teams from Plymouth and Durham were left stumped when asked: “What is the Kent village of Coxheath famous for?”
The World Custard Pie Championships were launched in Coxheath, near Maidstone, in 1967 by borough and parish councillor Mike FitzGerald (Ind), and returned to their original location in Stockett Lane in 2009.
Cllr FitzGerald was delighted that the event’s fame had reached such heights.
“I am surprised that it has been accepted as a question on such a stage; I am delighted about that.”
