The former head of a hospice has just cycled across the Alps, despite being seriously hurt in a bike accident two years ago.
Kate Bosley’s life-changing head injuries left her in a coma for two weeks and forced her to leave her post as chief executive at the Heart of Kent Hospice in Aylesford.
But Mrs Bosley, 53, of Weavering Street, Grove Green, just didn’t want to give up the sport and she recently achieved the feat of crossing a section of the Alps, between Geneva and Nice.
She said cycling tandem with her husband John, has helped her to recover from the accident which took place during training while on holiday in Tenerife in February 2013. It happened late at night with no witnesses and the cause remains a mystery.
She said: "One day I thought cycling so nearly killed me should I continue. I Googled head injury and found some stats, being in a car is as dangerous – so is walking down the stairs drunk.
"I decided I couldn’t give riding in car a miss, so why give up cycling? It nearly killed me, but it has definitely made me better."
Mrs Bosley has also written a book depicting her life called ReCycling Me: Back on the Bike. Before the accident, she was in the top 10 time trialists in Britain, aiming to get into the top six – she and John have since started timing their tandem cycles and have begun attempting longer distances.
She said: “Being unable to work has been a challenge. I can volunteer and do so regularly at the Village Urban Resort as a fitness instructor for people with disabilities.
“Because of what has happened I wanted to see if my story would help others with head injuries. Writing the book is my first attempt to do this.”
